DNA Fingerprinting with Bioreactors
Time needed: 2-3 hours
Main Objectives: Students will explore the principles of DNA fingerprinting, a critical tool in fields such as forensic science and biotechnology, while also investigating how bioreactors function in environmental applications.
Student Experiences: In this hands-on lab, students will prepare and analyze DNA, learning how scientists use gel electrophoresis to solve real-world problems. They will also examine the role of bioreactors in reducing environmental waste, offering a dual perspective on molecular biology and environmental technology.
Optional: a visit to a research partner’s lab may be possible, schedules permitting
Woodchip Bioreactor investigations
Time needed: 2-3 hours
Main Objectives: This experience focuses on sustainable agriculture and environmental management using woodchip bioreactors to improve water quality.
Student Experiences: Students will design and conduct experiments using a woodchip bioreactor to filter out pollutants from agricultural runoff. By analyzing data, they’ll gain insights into how bioreactors can help reduce nitrogen levels in water and contribute to cleaner ecosystems.

Water Quality through Ecosystem management
Time needed: 2-3 hours
Main Objectives: Students will explore how organisms’ natural adaptations can positively impact ecosystems, focusing on water quality and sustainable forestry management.
Student Experiences: Through hands-on experiments and ecosystem analysis, students will investigate how organisms like beavers contribute to water quality improvement. Using research on beaver dams as a case study, they will learn how these natural structures enhance wetland management and filter pollutants. This experience will help students connect biological adaptations to real-world environmental benefits.

Polymerase Chain Reaction
Time needed: 4-5 hours
Main Objectives: This session provides a deep dive into the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), a technique widely used in genetic research, medical diagnostics, and forensic science.
Student Experiences: Students will conduct a full PCR experiment, from setting up the reaction to analyzing amplified DNA. By learning how PCR can rapidly replicate DNA, they will understand its significance in various scientific fields and applications, including gene cloning, paternity testing, and pathogen detection.
