Connecting K-12 partners with on-campus research
The Biotechnology Outreach Education Center offers a unique option to connect K-12 teachers and students to relevant Iowa State University research projects.
We partner with K-12 teachers to bring innovative and exciting experiences to students. Visits can be tailored to students’ learning needs while featuring cutting-edge research done right here in Ames!
To schedule a visit, please read through the information below and complete the form. A BOEC staff member will contact you about details.
Experiences may include…
- Hands-on activities including gel electrophoresis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
- Woodchip bioreactor investigations that demonstrate the importance of groundwater quality
- Focus on the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices
- Visits to Iowa State laboratories and other nearby research facilities
- Supporting materials and resources to use with classes before and after your BOEC visit
On-campus visit considerations
On-campus school visits are offered Monday through Thursday during the school year.
Most on-campus visits to the BOEC will require at least 4-5 hours.Â
Groups typically arrive around 9:00am and leave around 3:00pm with time built in for lunch, which is on your own.
BOEC lab facilities can accommodate a maximum of 20 students.
Students and teachers will be asked to sign an ISU photo release form prior to the visit.
Teachers should obtain parental permission prior to the visit and possess all required student health documentation.

scheduling an On-campus BOEC visit
Visits to the Biotech Outreach Education Center located on the Iowa State University campus can be requested for any Monday through Thursday during the 2023-24 school year. Educators should use the request form below to initiate a school visit. BOEC staff will confirm information about the visit via email after the form is submitted.
