Research Experience for Pre-service STEM Teachers (REU)
new, authentic perspectives
Building teacher expertise one experiment at a time
The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program provides opportunities for future STEM teachers to engage in a research project in chemistry and environmental sciences by providing them with a hands-on research experience alongside an Iowa State University faculty member and their research team.
In partnership with the RegenPGC award and Chemurgy 2.0 award, the Office of Biotechnology Outreach and Education staff coordinate the REU program and provide professional development for pre-service teacher participants.
PROGRAM DATES: JUNE 2 – JULY 30, 2025
Application Deadline: March 1, 2025
RegenPGC is supported by Agriculture and Food Research Initiative Competitive Grant no. 2021-68012-35923 from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
Chemurgy 2.0 is funded by the National Science Foundation award No. 2242763 and is administered by Iowa State University in collaboration with the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa, Dordt University, and Central College.
we provide research opportunities for pre-service STEM teachers, helping them become highly-qualified and able to support their future students’ development of the skills, knowledge, and mindsets they need to realize their full potential.
Deepen knowledge
The research involvement deepens the REU's learning in both the content and context of science and promotes collaborations with faculty members and other colleagues.
Ask & Answer
This research experience promises to build and sustain a community of scholars who have the confidence to ask the "What if?" questions in science and then engage in the exciting journey to find the answers.
Connections
An additional objective is to showcase positive teaching role models for pre-service teacher participants.
