PCR Fun Day – December
December 3 @ 9:00 am - 2:30 pm
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a tried-and-true method used to amplify DNA. While the Biotech Outreach Education Center (BOEC) at ISU has provided training on PCR for many years, we have something new for you! Educators can now learn how to use equipment from the miniPCR company to simplify and streamline the process of amplifying and visualizing DNA in their classroom. The blueGel electrophoresis system and mini16 thermal cyclers are cutting-edge technologies that take the hassle out of biotech, allowing your students to focus on making sense of the results in an effort to build coherent arguments from evidence.
The PCR Fun Day provides teachers time to complete an entire PCR Investigation and have a little fun while doing so! These on-campus workshops leverage Iowa’s science education standards and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) to help grow teacher expertise through an interactive and informative one-day experience. After successful participation in the workshop, teachers can request the equipment and consumable supplies necessary to complete a PCR Investigation with their own students through the BOEC supply lending program.
Check out our PCR Investigation resource page for additional information about the protocol and associated supplies.
